Cold weather sends shivers down the spines of families all over Lincoln. And it’s not the frigid temperatures that leave us shivering. I mean, yes, it is, But more than that? We have months, MONTHS, of time to fill to keep our families happy and entertained. We all want to avoid the dreaded, “I’m bored!” Luckily, there are options all over Lincoln to fill those ice-covered months, and it goes beyond the standard, “do you want to build a snowman?” or “let’s drink hot chocolate…again.”
If you’re a fan of downtown Lincoln, fear no more, we’ve got you covered. Here are just a few of the endless options available to you to fill these next few months with memorable, and yes, even fun, activities.
For starters, the obvious. Morrill Hall. The fossils and displays are beyond amazing, but consider one of the planetarium laser light shows! Their schedules are as follows:
December 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19
Winter Holiday Laser Adventure | 6 & 7pm
Laser Beatles | 8pm
Laser U2 | 9:05pm
Music? Outer Space? And some seriously fantastic music? You really can’t go wrong.
Morrill Hall also offers Investigate: Second Saturday Science Lab, Saturday, December 12 | 10:00am-12:00pm. It’s an investigation of science and natural history topics. When you mix learning and fun, you really can’t lose.
Bundle up, because even the coldest weather can’t deter you from the Lincoln Railyard. Beginning December 4th, the ice rink hours are as follows:
Mon-Thurs: 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Friday: 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Sunday: 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Staying warm is fantastic, but watching your family scuttle around our very own ice rink? Priceless.
And when you need to warm up afterward, try The Mill. An old favorite for Lincoln adults, but also offering delicious hot chocolate for the kids. It’s a win, win.
But if you’d really rather stay in the comfort of your own home, try this easy craft. Fill a small vase with baking soda and few drops of food coloring (kid’s choice of color, of course), pour in a bit of vinegar and watch a volcano explode before your eyes. It’s magic, it’s inside the comfort of your home, and if you set the vase inside a baking dish, the cleanup is really a dream.
But if you’re looking for something for traditional, check out http://www.grossbelgian.com for horse drawn carriage services for any occasion you can think of. There’s nothing more wintery and magical than that.
So don’t fear winter; schedule a few simple outings and activities, and this too shall pass. Before we know it, spring will be just around the corner.
