Family-friendly activities for cold-weather months: Southwest Lincoln

It may not feel like it quite yet, but winter is right upon us. If the thought of your family cooped up in your house during winter months sends shivers up your spine, here are some simple, easy ways to make memories and cure boredom (without getting frostbite.)

Indoor activities are endless, regardless of your kids’ ages.

  • Plan an easy dinner and give age appropriate jobs to every family member. Pizza is a hit for even the pickiest of eaters, buy a premade crust and let everyone join in adding their favorite toppings. Of course, a little hot chocolate with marshmallows are a great reward for a job well down. Throw in a Frozen DVD after dinner, and you’ve nailed the perfect frigid night activity.
  • Did you know you can rent the Pioneer’s Park Nature Center for Birthday Parties? Those winter month birthdays are tough! But for reasonable prices you can plan a Nature Center Tour, with guide and activities, and the prices fit nicely into your budget.
  • You don’t even need a birthday to plan a trip to the Pioneer’s Park Nature Center, they’re open year round. Bundle up and hit the trails and enjoy their brand new digging sandbox (complete with shovels and hidden treasures in the sand.) Just remember the scarves and gloves!
  • Who doesn’t want to warm up with a dreamy, colossal cinnamon roll? Every Saturday through December 19th enjoy a warm and gooey cinnamon roll at Russ’s Market, Coddington and West A, from 8am to 11am, only $4 for 3!
  • If you’d like to warm up for a night without little ones tagging along, every Russ’s Market, including Coddington and West A, is offering a Pear, Cheese, and Wine tasting Friday December 18th from 4-6pm.

But let’s face it, snow is coming, and probably piles of it. If you aren’t too keen on bundling your kids, and yourself, in layers upon layers of warm clothes (that almost instantly become soaked and frozen stiff with painful ice layers) consider this trick: Fill a large Rubbermaid tub with fresh, soft and fluffy snow, and place it in the bathtub. Kids will get the same effect of romping around outside, without the hassles of piles of dripping snow boots and laundry…laundry…laundry…

But if you are a winter lover, and the snow and low temps are no match for you, get those sleds out! Find a hill in your backyard or, again, Pioneer’s Park will be our saving grace. Regardless of crowds you can always find a secluded spot in the 668 acres of protected prairie. And if you stumble upon a buffalo habitat (fully caged of course), it’s an added bonus!
