#NebraskaFlood | How To Help

Flooding of a town in Nebraska
Dave Kettering -Telegraph Herald – AP

Over the past week much of the state has experienced tragedy as floods have submerged homes, farms and communities. Bridges have been swept away, roads have been eroded, lives have been changed.

In order to help restore some hope, we have put together ways you can help the victims of this natural disaster. Remember when donating to make sure you are giving to a trusted organization and not a scam. To learn how to ensure you’re doing this, read this note from Attorney General Doug Peterson.

Some trusted organizations you can donate to include:

  • The Salvation Army
  • Red Cross
  • Local United Way
  • Nebraska Department of Agriculture
  • Nebraska Cattlemen
  • Local Community Foundations
  • Nebraska Farm Bureau
  • Nebraska Preparedness Partnerships

Local news outlets 10/11 Now and Lincoln Journal Star have put together great information regarding these organizations and what they are looking for to help flooding victims.

Governor Pete Ricketts also suggests reaching out to your county’s Emergency Management Director/Coordinator which can be found the on Nebraska Emergency Management Agency here. The NEMA website also can help provide great information for situations like these including where to find Red Cross shelters and health resources.

Remember to check in with your favorite local charities and organizations to see what they are accepting in relief. Many local religious organizations and charities are working hard to provide support and relief. Be patient as their resources may be limited when organizing efforts of this magnitude .

Many locals restaurants are giving back too. On Wednesday, March 20th, from 5 pm to 9 pm the Raising Canes in Lincoln, Fremont, Norfolk, Grand Island, Kearney, and North Platte will giving 15 percent of their sales to The Salvation Army. They will also be serving as a donation drop site through Sunday. The Omaha locations will running the 15 percent giving on Wednesday, March 27th, from 5 pm to 9 pm.

Honest Abe’s will giving a free order of freedom fries to any person who donates non-perishable goods, cases of bottled water, cleaning supplies, hygiene supplies and pre-packaged snack items for the flood victims from Tuesday, March 19th through Friday, March 22nd.

Pillar Restaurant Group is accepting item dropoffs on Tuesday, March 19th from 11 am to 10 pm at their locations: Venue Restaurant and Lounge, Piedmont Bistro by Venue, Cactus Modern Mexican & Catina by Venue. They are working with Silverhawk Aviation to get the supplies to their needed locations.

Nebraska continues to show why it is a truly special place to live. Remember to stay #NebraskaStrong and continue to help our families, friends, and neighbors as this will leave an impact for months to years.

5 Ways to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Lincoln

It’s the one day of the year when we can all feel the luck of the Irish, no matter our ancestry. But while wearing green is a given if you don’t want to get pinched, there are numerous other ways to celebrate the saint who drove snakes from Ireland right here in Lincoln.

Folk Band Performing

Show your spirit at the Nebraska Irish Music Festival:

As could be expected, McKinney’s Irish Pub is doing it up right by hosting the Nebraska Irish Music Festival, a celebration of Nebraskans who are keeping their heritage alive. Featuring a heated street tent, a Lucky Charms eating contest, kilt competition and plenty of bangers and mash, the party is set to go on from 9 a.m. Saturday through the evening.

Sing-a-long to Irish classics at Deer Springs Winery:

Have you been waiting all year for your chance to break out those Irish jams? Join the chorus at Deer Springs Winery from 7-9 p.m. on Saturday night for a sing-a-long led by Chris Sayre.

Enjoy authentic Irish fare at Cappy’s:

If your idea of a good time is taking a break from the dance floor to indulge in corned beef and hash, look no farther than Cappy’s Hotspot Bar and Grill. The green beer will be flowing from 9:30 p.m. Saturday night onward—with enough Irish stew to keep the designated driver happy, too.

Go green with the Lil’ Chefs St. Patrick’s Day Party:

Leprechauns aren’t the only wee ones interested in St. Patrick’s Day! Give your kids a chance to celebrate at 10 a.m. Saturday with a green food-themed cooking class at the Williamsburg Hy-Vee. The class is suitable for lads and lassies from 3 to 11 years old and pre-registration is required.

Get the whole family involved at the Leprechauns and Limericks Event:

How often do you get the chance to earn your very own leprechaun name? Bring the family over to Barnes and Noble on Pine Lake Road at 2 p.m. on Saturday to receive your new moniker, write a limerick or two and learn an expert’s best tips for leprechaun-proofing your home.

Pet Friendly Places in Lincoln

Curious dog in a cafe

Pets are family, too, so it’s no surprise that family-friendly Lincoln is becoming more accepting of pets in public. Getting your new Christmas puppy out and about or exercising that old dog that’s learning new tricks is easy to do around town. Here are a few places that will welcome your pet on your next outing.

The Parthenon, which has a great selection of Greek and Mediterranean foods, welcomes pets for patio dining. In addition to welcoming pets, they’re well known for their great atmosphere and stellar service. They’ll even bring your pup a water dish and some treats. You can find this family owned local favorite at 5500 South 56th St #8 here in Lincoln.

If you’re looking to relax with a beer and your dog but want to get out of the house, check out Code Beer Company. They have 11 different beers on tap, including IPAs, ales, and wheat beers. They allow dogs to join their owners indoors as they seek respite from the cold. You can find this dog-loving craft brewery at 200 S Antelope Valley Pkwy.

Got a love for caffeine and canines? The Mill Coffee and Tea at the Historic Haymarket has caffeine in your favorite form and is a welcoming spot for Man’s Best Friend. Grab a cuppa with your pupper because coffee is life. You can find the Mill at 800 P Street.

Whether you’re looking for a hearty lunch, a cold brew, or a warming cup of coffee, there’s something for everyone and their furry friends in Lincoln.

Jazz in January | Winter Fundraiser for the Local Jazz

Jazz in January Winter Fundraiser

Every year in January the stunning Boiler Grand Hall hosts an annual fundraiser called Jazz in January. This year, you can catch two fundraising events by well-known Jazz musicians — Dave Stryker Quartet and the Mitch Towne Quartet.

January 24th at 8PM, hear the Dave Stryker Quartet while supporting the benefit. For the tenth time, Stryker was voted into the Downbeat Critics and Readers Poll in 2017 and is a local favorite. Dave Stryker is a jazz guitarist who started his early days of playing Jazz in Omaha.

On January 29th, the Boiler Grand Hall will be featuring the Mitch Towne Quartet for their fundraiser. Mitch Towne has a Grammy nomination under his belt and is an excellent Jazz keyboardist. He has worked with a Grammy-winning producer and well-respected fellow Jazz musicians, like the previously mentioned Dave Stryker. The Mitch Towne Quartet’s show also starts at 8 PM.

In addition to the jazz, the beautiful building is another excellent reason to attend the event. The Grand Manse building at 129 North 10th Street in downtown Lincoln is the home of the Boiler Grand Hall. Make sure as you’re making your way through the Grand Hall to take note of the rich architecture, detailed crown molding and the 24-foot oak wood walls. These events are supported by Boiler Brewing Company, Jazz in June, Jazz time Smooth Radio, Downtown Lincoln, and The Eagle Group. As they say at Boiler Grand Hall, “Jazz has a new home in Lincoln.”

In the Time of Lilacs

lilacsThe amazing profusion that is Spring is a time of renewal laced with melancholy for many.  Our senses are filled with sights, sounds and smells that are reawakened, reminding us that Winter’s challenges have past and the gifts of this new cycle of Nature are upon us….at last!

The array of color born in the multitude of blossoms is amazing throughout our Midwestern landscape.  We’re dazzled by the sometimes snow-laden gold of the forsythia, the lavender beauty of the redbuds, as well as countless varieties of flowering pear and crabapple trees.

Of the Spring beauties that occupy a very special place in my celebration of Spring, the Lilacs are my favorite.  Regardless of their purple, lavender or white variety, the sturdy Lilac reflects, I think, the strength and character of our proud Nebraska heritage.  How so?

Lilacs exhibit an ability to withstand years of challenge when rain is limited.  Yet, their perfumed beauty is an essence that is the Lilac’s alone.  Like the people who celebrate its unique offerings, Lilacs reappear each Spring, bringing optimism for the seasons ahead.

My mother’s yard was home to several Lilac bushes that originated on the homestead of our family from the 1880’s near Adams, NE.  Lilacs were dear to her as they are to me.  Each Spring, I celebrate her life with the reappearance of this hallowed plant, especially at the time of her late April passing in 2004, in the time of Lilacs.

We have so much to celebrate with the commencement of this grand scheme of color that is Spring, starring a plethora of blossoms including the faithful Lilac.  Enjoy!

The event featured seven different soup and chili entries, plus a cinnamon roll contest. Agents and staff vote for their favorite soup or chili with $1 voting beans, and the winner gets the People’s Choice Award. Chris Arnold, HomeServices of Nebraska IT Network Administrator, won the People’s Choice Award for his chicken and andouille sausage gumbo. Woods Bros Wilderness Hills agent Dede Mau won third place for her potato soup.
