Woods Bros Realty and HOME Real Estate agents and staff raised a record $3,200 during the seventh annual Soup or Chili Cook-off for Cancer Wednesday in Lincoln.

The Chili Cook-Off raised money for the American Cancer Society through $1 voting beans. Voters were made up of Woods Bros and HOME agents and staff, along with staff from Nebraska Land Title and Abstract (NLTA), HomeServices Lending, HomeServices of Nebraska Insurance and Larabee School of Real Estate. The group has raised more than $16,000 at these events over the years, but this year was the most money raised in a single event to date.

The People’s Choice Award (with the most beans) went to a HOME agent from the HOME North office for their Boot Camp Chili, with Kimberly Rempel of the HOME Pine Lake office coming in a close second, and Linda & Bill Kuhlmann of the Woods Bros Realty Wilderness Hills office coming in third place.

This year the Celebrity Judge Award went to Gina, Fran & The Steves from the HOME Real Estate Pioneer Greens office for their “Pozole.” Celebrity judges were Mayor Chris Beutler, Channel 8 Sports Anchor Peter Terpstra, Morning Show Host JP from New Country 96.9, and Hillcrest Country Club Executive Chef Jeramy Behn.

“Cancer has and is affecting so many of our agents and staff and their families,” HomeServices of Nebraska CEO Gene Brake said. “It’s a good time for us to get together to network and sample some great soups while we also raise money for a worthy cause.”

The 2016 participants from Woods Bros Realty were: The Tidball Team, Country Club Plaza office; Kim Wiedenbeck, Lincolnshire Square office; Linda & Bill Kuhlman, Wilderness Hills office. HOME Real Estate participants were: Connie Boender, Cotner office; Kimberly Rempel, Pine Lake office; and Gina, Fran and the Steves of Pioneer Greens.  The  Gailynn Alberts represented the Support Services office.

Foundation for Giving distributes $18k

Members of Woods Bros Realty’s Foundation for Giving committee recently gave out $18,800 in funds raised throughout the year to local charity organizations.

The Woods Bros Realty Foundation for Giving was established in 1987 by Pace Woods, Sr. to support those less fortunate in local communities. Every time a Woods Bros Realty sales professional closes one side of a transaction, the agent makes contribution to the Foundation, which is then matched by the company.

Each fall a committee of agents—selected by their offices to serve four-year terms—reviews all the requests and determines funding. A Woods Bros agent or employee must sponsor each request accepted by the Foundation.

Co-Chairperson Judy Sasek said she looks forward to hearing from the agencies in which Woods Bros agents are involved.

“It is very educational, and yet humbling at the same time, to learn about the numerous entities out in our communities assisting people in need of different services and outreach,” Sasek said.

This year, the transaction donation total was $13,000, with a last-minute appeal from the committee that raised an additional $5,800. Since the inception of the Woods Bros Realty Foundation for Giving, more than $330,800 has been donated.

“It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with all the agents and the different agencies our agents are affiliated with,” said Arla Meyer, Foundation for Giving co-chairperson. “There is nothing better than being able to give back to our local communities, based off of the team effort of all Woods agents and the company.”

Some companies who were helped by the Foundation for Giving in 2015 include the Kids Against Hunger, St. Monica’s, Voices of Hope, CASA for York County, Community Crops, Lincoln Children’s Zoo, BackPack Program, Child Advocacy Center, Cedars Youth Services, Young Life, Friendship Home, Mourning Hope, Huntington School, Grand Island Habitat for Humanity, Youth Leadership LincolnSeward Youth Center, Lincoln Community Playhouse, and TeamMates Mentoring Program, Foundation for Lincoln City Libraries, The Bay, and Hope Harbor.

Woods Bros agents plant 125 trees at Pioneers Park

Woods Bros Realty agents and staff recently planted 125 trees in the Pioneers Park area, in honor of the company’s 125-plus years in the community.

Woods Bros Realty worked with Lincoln Parks and Recreation to line several areas of the park and the golf course with trees. The company wanted to give back to the community, and decided to honor some of its history with Pioneers Park.

Legend has it that Mark Woods was the one who suggested to John F. Harris that he should gift a park to the citizens of Lincoln. It was also reported (by F. Pace Woods II in his “Keeping the Pace” series) that the Woods family donated evergreen trees and lilac bushes from their nursery.

Arla Meyer, managing broker of the Woods Bros Lincolnshire Square office, coordinated the event.

“This is a way to give back to something Woods Bros was a part of since the beginning,” she said. “It’s the little things that can and do make a difference.”

Dozens of agents and staff arrived at the park September 19, 2015, and had 125 trees planted in just over one hour.

It must have been a fabulous home that Mark Woods and his son, Pace Woods, Sr., were visiting in the late-1920s: the New York City home of John F. Harris. Harris had been a childhood friend of Mark Woods and his brothers, and he had become a successful investment banker. He was a Lincoln native who wanted to do something back home to honor the memory of his parents.

According to Pace Woods, Jr., his grandfather, “…suggested that [Harris] donate a park to the citizens [of Lincoln].” That he would do. Pioneers Park came to life on roughly 600 acres of rolling prairie north of Van Dorn in west Lincoln that Harris donated over the course of three years (1928 – 1930). The Harris family also donated several animal sculptures for the park, including the bronze buffalo that greets visitors at the center of the east entry’s roundabout.

Another Lincoln native designed the wonderful park. Ernst Herminghaus was a landscape designer for Woods Bros developments and was trained at Harvard University as a landscape architect. The easternmost 80 acres of the park, closest to Coddington, were the first to be designed, and the plans included incorporating vistas of the Nebraska State Capitol Building that was then under construction.

Pace Woods, Jr., wrote that his family’s nursery, located south of Sheridan Boulevard and east of South 33rd Street, donated evergreen trees and lilac bushes to line the Coddington Street approach to Pioneers Park.

Pioneers Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. As historian Ed Zimmer noted in the site’s Registration Form, Lincoln was undergoing a period of phenomenal growth in the 1920s. During the Depression, the park provided much needed public recreation space. It likewise created employment for people and galvanized development opportunities for the city’s parks and recreation spaces.

True to their form, the Woods brothers and other families of means used a combination of creative and practical resources to make this civic opportunity meaningful and long lasting. In the spring/early summer of 2015, Woods Bros Realty will launch half of a 125-tree donation to the Pioneers Park area to commemorate this longtime relationship and its 125 years in the community.

The group has raised more than $13,000 at these events to date.

This year the Celebrity Judge Award went to John Janovy of the Woods Bros Realty Lincolnshire Square office for his T&T Chili. Celebrity judges were Channel 8 Eyewitness News Anchor Rod Fowler, Lazlo’s Owner Jay Jarvis, and Lincoln Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Steve Joel.

“We’ve had a lot of cancer within our organization, and it’s just affected so many families, so many agents, that we wanted to do something,” HomeServices of Nebraska CEO Gene Brake said. “This was our way of participating and trying to help find a cure.”

Woods Bros Realty helps raise $2,600 for Heart Association

Woods Bros Realty offices helped raise more than $2,600 for the American Heart Association during the company’s annual “Paper Heart Challenge.”

The Lincolnshire Square office won the challenge, raising more than $1,000 from the sales of different colored paper hearts. The winning office earns a breakfast cooked by corporate staff.

Woods Bros Realty and its sister companies hold the “Paper Heart Challenge” each February during National Heart Health month.

Woods Bros Realty was pleased to be a sponsor of the Lincoln Partnership for Economic Development’s JumpStart Challenge for the second year in a row. Woods Bros and its parent company, HomeServices of Nebraska, awarded a $1,000 cash prize to the team of Cory Scott and Matan Gill, who presented an innovative solution named “myBlock” to the company’s neighborhood reviews challenge.

“Not only was myBlock well designed, Cory and Matan did excellent research into the business and regulatory side of the problem,” said Ben Dinger, Internet Services Manager for HomeServices of Nebraska, who, alongside General Manager Shannon Harner, awarded the prize to Scott and Gill.

LPED’s JumpStart challenge involves corporate sponsors presenting an industry problem to various teams who, in turn, pitch a solution at a later date to the companies. HomeServices was joined by Cabela’s and nMotion accelerator in judging the Challenge, which is now in its third year. Foundation for Giving meetings start today

The Woods Bros Realty Foundation for Giving committee starts its annual meetings today.  These meetings consist of Woods Bros agents who have requested funds for the local charities with which they’re involved. Requests sometimes involve help for underprivileged children, iPads to help with learning, zoo passes, books, and much more. Friday the committee announces contributions and gives back to the community.

“The Foundation For Giving is an amazing, positive, and strong attribute of the Woods Bros Realty family,” said Managing Broker Arla Meyer. “This is one of the benefits of being an agent with the organization.”

The Foundation for Giving was started in 1987 by Pace Woods Sr, as he wanted to thank the agents who donated their time and money to local causes. Out of every closing each agent contributions to the Foundation, and the company matches the contribution. The idea from Pace Woods Sr.  was  to continue to  give back to the communities Woods Bros serves and with whom agents are affiliated.

“Let’s be honest,” Meyer said.  “Without the community and the people we are nothing. I personally can tell you listening to all the different nonprofit organizations will pull at your heart strings, but I am also so thankful and appreciative these organizations are here to help people in our communities.
